Savoia Cigno

This drawing made in colored pencils is a what-if design for a modern flying boat with high performace. Often, I'll take a design that existed and flew at one time in history and just suppose that the need and motivation existed again for a similar craft. So, refer to the model I brought to this collection a while ago, the Savoia S55. Now suppose that a designer was tasked with a remake of this machine today. The key features would be high speed and transoceanic range plus good maneuverability. The option of passenger space would be secondary, if at all, this would be more like the Rutan World Voyager design. Now using modern materials like composites and of course jet propulsion plus shapes designed in CAD tools - rebuild the S55. So this emerges, the Savoia Cigno (Swan) a two seat amphibian capable of low supersonic speeds. Like in the original S55, it would be possible for extra seating to be added to the twin catamaran hulls, probably no more than 5 in each side. It would not be a ride like in a widebody liner though, but it would be a lot quicker travel time. Maybe someday I'll get time to put this into plastic.
